Dragon Inn North To Close In Glenview After 44 Years

The longtime North Shore Chinese restaurant will shut its doors for good Thursday.

GLENVIEW, IL — An North Shore Chinese food institution is closing its doors this week. The Dragon Inn North is permanently closing Thursday after more than 40 years in Glenview, its owner announced. The restaurant developed from Chicagoland's first Mandarin restaurant, which opened in south suburban Glenwood in 1964, according to its menu.

Since 1974, it has been located inside a pagoda-style building at 1650 Waukegan Rd., from which it has served several generations of customers.

In a message to patrons included in menus earlier this month, owner Jeanette Sih broke the news:

It is with great sadness that we must announce the final days at The Dragon Inn North. My mother started the restaurant in 1974. After many years she retired and I, along with my partner, Mr. Chan, took over in 1984. He is the one who created the wonderful dishes that everyone has enjoyed over the years.
We have many memories of the fun we had and so many of you have become personal friends. We laughed a lot, cried a little and shared countless parties, birthdays, weddings and more with you and your families.
Thank you for your friendship and loyal support. It is hard to say goodbye. On behalf of the entire family at The Dragon Inn North you will always be in our hears.

The 1.63-acre site of the restaurant was listed publicly in January asking for a price of $1.4 million. As of May 29, the sale of the two-lot property was classified as pending.
