Thurston, who turned 50 in May, "was a teacher and mentor to many, a friend to all," according to his obituary from Haben Funeral Home & Crematory in Skokie.

Thurston's son, Isaac, 20, is accused of fatally stabbing his father and has been charged with felony first-degree murder. Isaac Thurston was released from the Cook County Jail Tuesday after posting 10 percent, or $100,000, of his $1 million bond, which had been handed down earlier in the day. A condition of his release is he must wear electronic monitoring and he is due back in court on Aug. 29.
