Police Warn Residents To Prepare For Tropical Storm Cristobal

Update: Severe thunderstorm warning added as remnants of storm are expected to hit the Glenview area starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

UPDATE: 3 P.M. Tuesday — The National Weather Service is also issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for Glenview. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.


GLENVIEW, IL — Residents should be ready for some possible severe weather conditions Tuesday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal hit the area, according to the National Weather Service. The Glenview Police Department sent out social media posts at Monday night advising residents of expected heavy wind. Residents are also being asked to bring in trash cans and secure patio areas with the activity predicted to occur between 4 p.m. and midnight.

BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT (sent out at 3:21 a.m. Tuesday)

  • Remains in effect from 10 a.m. through late tonight
  • Location: Lake County and Lake Michigan beaches
  • High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected
  • Forecast wave heights building 5-8 feet
  • Strong rip currents and structural currents expected
  • Remain out of the water to avoid dangerous swimming conditions
  • Do not venture out on shoreline structures or jetties.
  • Please check with your local authorities on potential beach closures.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK (sent out at 3:57 a.m. Tuesday)

  • This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of North Central
  • Illinois, Northeast Illinois, including Lake County and Cook County, and Northwest Indiana.
  • Weather hazards expected
  • Limited thunderstorm risk with an associated elevated tornado risk.
  • Elevated damaging wind risk (up to 60 mph)
  • Limited Flooding Risk.
  • Elevated Non thunderstorm wind Risk.
  • Elevated Lakeshore Flood Risk.
  • High Swim Risk
  • The remnants of tropical storm Cristobal will move across the area this afternoon into this evening. There is a chance of isolated thunderstorms that could pose a brief tornado or damaging wind threat.
  • Showers with brief but torrential rains are likely.
  • Outside of thunderstorms, southeast winds will gust 40 to 45 mph this afternoon, shifting southwest tonight before diminishing.
  • Strong southeast winds this afternoon will create high waves on Lake Michigan, producing dangerous swimming conditions as well as the potential for minor lakeshore flooding along the Illinois shore.
