GLENVIEW, IL — According to Kirk Reasoner, commander of American Legion Post 166, only 2 percent of Americans are veterans or are currently serving in the armed forces. His organization is partnering with the Village of Glenview to honor the military locally.

A Hometown Heroes program is set to launch, with the Village planning to display banners for up to 10 new service members every year for several weeks in May leading up to Memorial Day.

"This gives us an opportunity to keep them in people's minds for the service that they gave to their country and the sacrifice that they made in the service to their country," Reasoner said.

According to officials, the program is intended to honor and recognize individuals from the Village of Glenview who have served in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Glenview Hometown Heroes Program allows those who serve(d) to be honored by having a banner placed on a municipal utility pole in the heart of Downtown Glenview.

"Glenview's history is forever linked to Naval Air Station Glenview," Village President Mike Jenny said in a news release. "There will always be an enduring bond with the military here in Glenview, and the base was and remains a tremendous source of pride for our community. Hometown Heroes gives us a chance to say thank you to all who served here in Glenview and beyond."
