Village Treasure House earns Environmental Sustainability Award

Volunteers and customers team up to achieve recycling and material reuse to save costs, help protect environment

The “Glenview Environmental Sustainability Award 2023” was announced to honor Village Treasure House (VTH) for its Education and Outreach initiatives, one of three award categories including Innovation and Leadership.

The award was presented to representatives of VTH at a recent Village of Glenview Board of Trustees meeting as part of the Village’s Environmental and Natural Resources Commission Sustainability Awards program.

The “Education and Outreach” category recognizes an organization that has “taken to influence its employees, members, customers, or other stakeholders to improve sustainable practices. Examples of this are, but not limited to, community outreach or educational events,” according to a media release issued by David Just, Community Engagement Manager, Village of Glenview.

100% of its profits are donated to local agencies serving people in need in our communities

The funds collected through sales of these items support local non-profit service agencies serving people in need in our communities. Through their education and outreach in the community, Village Treasure House “re-homed” more than 15,000 items last year. The group also puts an emphasis on reusing materials like bags, ribbon, wrapping paper and tags, reducing the purchase of supplies, and allowing more funds to go back to their programs.

Award earned through collective efforts of volunteers and customers

“We were very honored and proud to receive the award. We have been reusing and recycling for as long as VTH has been in operation! In the beginning we didn't even have our own bags - we put purchases in donated grocery and shopping bags. We have always reused price tags and ribbons as well,” said Deedee Brannigan, VTH Director of Merchandising and Intake, and a Northfield resident.

“As we've grown,” Brannigan added, “we've looked for ways to expand our ability to keep our "donations" to the landfill at a minimum. Our customer base and our volunteers have been wonderful about bringing paper, bubble wrap and boxes to the shop so that we can use them to package merchandise.

Brannigan emphasizes: “Of course, our entire business is built around recycling home furnishings and our consignors and donors are grateful that their treasured items are being used and loved by a new owner. We really appreciate being acknowledged by the Village of Glenview for our efforts.”
