West Nile Virus Infection Risk Remains Until Frost: North Shore Agency

GLENVIEW, IL — While saying the risk level of West Nile Virus infection is currently "low," the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District is reminding residents to take precautionary measures until the first frost. According to the Northfield-based agency, a batch of mosquitoes tested positive last week for WNV in Glenview.

Out of 124 tests this season, 42 have come back positive in Glenview/Golf.

In addition, mosquito batches tested in Evanston, Kenilworth, Skokie and Wilmette also came back positive for WNV between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22.

Here is a look at the total number of batches tested for the season:

  • Evanston (67 of 252 batches have tested positive for the WNV)
  • Glencoe (13 of 51)
  • Glenview/Golf (42 of 124)
  • Kenilworth (21 of 72)
  • Lincolnwood (25 of 86)
  • Morton Grove (20 of 80)
  • Niles (eight of 41)
  • Northbrook (four of 21)
  • Northfield (19 of 75)
  • Skokie (43 of 188)
  • Wilmette (28 of 72)
  • Winnetka (23 of 72)
  • Total for all municipalities (127 batches of 790 have tested positive for WNV)

The first human case of West Nile virus in 2023 was reported in Lake County last week. A Lake County resident in their 60s became ill from the virus in September, according to the Lake County Health Department from the health department.
