HINSDALE, IL – The Hinsdale High School District 86 board on Thursday plans to look at a "single comprehensive" registration fee of $475 for students.

The new fee would cover course fees, textbooks, course supplies, academic field trips, student identification cards, physical education uniforms, graduate fees, technology fees and course-related field trips.

It would not cover activity and athletic fees, activity passes, and driver's education fees.

The district acknowledges the proposed fee seems higher than what parents paid before. That's because it includes the cost of required textbooks, which parents previously paid for.

The district can buy textbooks in bulk, securing competitive pricing, which would ultimately reduce families' overall costs, the district said.

"This comprehensive fee aims to stabilize costs, reducing year-to-year fluctuations caused by different course schedules," the district said in its proposal.

Parents can set up payment plans for the fees.

The district waives such fees for students who receive free or reduced-price lunches.

The board does not plan to take action on the fee Thursday.
