HINSDALE, IL – The Hinsdale High School District 86 board plans to vote Thursday on giving a one-time $6,000 pay increase to a top official.

The one-year raise is proposed for Kari Smith, assistant superintendent for student services.

Smith started in July 2022 at a salary of $176,000. For the 2023-24 school year, the board increased administrators' pay, including an $8,800 hike for Smith, to $184,800.

In December, the board voted to increase Smith's pay to $187,800 for this budget year, which started July 1. That was part of a package of raises for top officials.

Given December's action, it is unclear why Smith would get a one-time pay increase now. Patch emailed an inquiry to the district.

With the pay hike, Smith would receive a total of $193,800 this budget year.

For five years before coming to District 86, Smith, who has her doctorate in special education, headed student services for Elmwood Park School District 401.
