Joliet Council Meeting Leaves Fate of Rialto Uncertain

The council did not vote on an intergovernmental agreement from the theatre.

JOLIET, IL — The Rialto Square Theatre is already closed, according to one Joliet council member.

The Joliet City Council met Wednesday to discuss an intergovernmental agreement from the Rialto Square Theatre. According to the agreement, the theatre is asking for $500,000 in 2017, $450,000 in 2018, $400,000 in 2019 and $350,000 in 2020.

Councilwoman Brooke Hernandez Brewer said the Rialto is “already closed.”

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he could not support a $500,000 contribution to the theater.

The city council did not vote on the intergovernmental agreement.

City Manager Jim Hock said he would draft a resolution requesting the Rialto board to investigate and ask for a county wide referendum with a tax to be able to support themselves. He will also draft a resolution for state senators and representatives to initiate legislation to transfer ownership of the Rialto properties to the city.
