JOLIET — While most of Joliet's citizens were sound asleep, the Joliet Fire Department responded to an overnight fire early Tuesday morning at an apartment building on the east side. The fire broke out at 556 Ward Avenue.

According to fire chief Jeff Carey:

Firefighters from stations 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 responded to Ward Avenue when the fire was reported at 2:03 a.m. He said the two-story residential apartment building was showing heavy fire coming from both the first and second floors. A search of the building confirmed that everyone who lived there had made it out safely.
