Tax Hike For Parks In La Grange On Table

The tax would pay for capital projects, not day-to-day operational spending, an official said.

A proposed property tax increase is expected to cost the owner of a $500,000 house an extra $71 a year, according to the Park District of La Grange.

LA GRANGE, IL – The board for the Park District of La Grange plans to vote Monday on whether to put a property tax increase before voters.

If the board approves a referendum, voters would decide whether to allow the district to go into debt by $13.9 million for nearly 25 years to pay for projects at local parks.

The measure would be on the Nov. 5 ballot.

A Patch story in June detailed what the district plans to do with the money.

In an email to Patch late last week, Jenny Bechtold, the district's executive director, said the new tax would go toward capital projects and would not be used for day-to-day operational costs.

In June, the board reached a "verbal consensus" to put the tax increase on the ballot.

The board meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the De Sitter Room at the recreational facility, 536 East Ave.
