MOKENA, IL — Residents of Mokena might be used to hearing the hooting of owls, but spotting one can be a bit trickier. Unless, of course, you get some tips from the experts on where and how to look. That's where the Forest Preserve District of Will County comes in.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County is scheduled to host a free Owl Prowl program Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Hickory Creek Preserve - LaPorte Road Access. There are two time slots for the Owl Prowl: from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for all ages, and another from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for those ages 16 and up.

Participants will get a chance to hike through the forest preserve — which normally closes at dusk — to learn about the different owl species in Illinois, have a chance to maybe spot one of the elusive birds during its prime hours, and enjoy a campfire and marshmallows afterward.

There are three main species of owl found in Illinois, according to Suzy Lyttle, program co-ordinator for the forest preserve: the great horned owl, which can grow up to 2-feet tall; the barred owl, which has a call that sounds something like "Who cooks for you?"; and the eastern screech owl, a tinier version of the species that only grows to about 8 inches.

Participants should be prepared to hike approximately 1 mile over multiple terrains, including grassy areas, paved trails and wooded areas, Lyttle said. It's recommended that people dress according to the weather, as it can be a little chilly in November.

The Owl Prowl will take place during the twilight and evening hours, which is the best time to catch a glimpse of the owls, but participants are asked not to bring flashlights because the light could frighten the birds away, Lyttle said. Binoculars for getting a closer look are OK.

Owl programs always fill up fast, Lyttle said, so registering early is recommended.
