Moser Tower Repair To Cost Millions

Naperville officials said repairs to the 160-foot-tall tower that houses a carillon could cost $1.6 million to about $3.8 million.

NAPERVILLE, IL - Naperville officials said repairs to Moser Tower could cost $1.6 million to about $3.8 million, according to a report in the AP.

The assessment of the 160-foot-tall tower was released Thursday and found the structure's "steel is beginning to corrode, its precast concrete is cracking and the concrete's mortar joints are facing deterioration," according to the report. The assessment said changing temperatures made the steel expand and contract, resulting in cracks. The repairs aren't urgent, and should take place over the next years, according to officials.

The tower holds the Millennium Carillon, the multi-million dollar project which commemorates the new millennium and was completed in 2007. It's the fourth largest in North America - and one of only several grand carillons in the world - featuring 72 bells spanning six octaves, according to the Naperville Park District.
