Services Planned For Boy Killed By Train While Biking In Glenview

GLENVIEW, IL — Funeral services are planned later this week for a boy killed by an Amtrak train while he was bicycling in Glenview. Ryan McDonagh, 15, who was a student at Glenbrook South High School, died July 1.

McDonagh was riding his bike at the North Glenview Train Station, 2301 Lehigh Ave, when the incident occurred at around 6:51 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled McDonagh's death an accident. The CCMEO said McDonagh was a resident of Northbrook.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1775 Grove St., Glenview. According to McDonagh's obituary from Donnellan Family Funeral Services, McDonagh's family will receive friends outside the church after the service.

"We are saddened to report the passing of Ryan McDonagh, son of Kevin (Mary Lou), nephew of former Men's Club President Jeff (Julie) Schultz, and grandson of longtime OLPH parishioners, Joan and the late Jim O'Brien," the church said in an email to parishioners. "Please keep the McDonagh, Schultz, and O'Brien families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

According to his obituary, McDonagh was the beloved son of Kevin and Mary Lou McDonagh; adored brother of Colleen (Alan) Wade, Molly, Sean, Sarah, and Thomas. He had a close and affectionate relationship with his many cousins, aunts, and uncles and was the treasured grandson of Joan O’Brien, the late Jim O’Brien, Martin McDonagh, and the late Teresa McDonagh.

McDonagh also leaves behind many, many close friends and teammates, "with whom he had wonderful relationships and shared countless laughs."

McDonagh was a passionate member of the Glenbrook South gymnastics and wrestling teams, and "loved his coaches and teammates." He excelled when faced with challenges and was just beginning to realize his potential. He was a fierce competitor and had the rare ability to balance fun, dedication, and hard work. His family "is so proud of the way he lived his life," according to the obituary.

"Ryan was unapologetically himself. He was carefree, honest, confident, funny, true to himself, loyal, and afriend to all. He always said yes to fun. He extended kindness to everyone he met," the obituary concludes.
