NORTHBROOK, IL — Northbrook is an active biking community, with the Bike the Green and Northbrook Grand Prix scheduled for Thursday. Just one day later, on Friday, the Northbrook Park District will be holding its 11th annual Kids' Duathlon.

The event, open to children ages 5 to 14, takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. According to the park district, all participants will bike two laps around the Velodrome, then run a course along Meadowhill Park. Children ages 5 to 7 will run a quarter-mile, children ages 8 to 10 will run a half-mile, and children ages 11 to 14 will run one mile.

There will be post-race pizza, drinks and dessert, plus admission to the nearby Meadowhill Aquatic Center.

The fee is $30 per child. All participants will receive an event T-shirt and gift bag. Children should bring a bicycle (no training wheels), helmet and tennis shoes.

Meri Shea, NPD athletics manager, said the duathlon "provides a unique alternative to the more common running-only race."
