OAK LAWN, IL — Oak Lawn’s annual Blue Ribbon Walk will step off this Saturday, June 1, rain or shine. Residents can show their appreciation for Oak Lawn’s first responders at Lake Shore Park, 9610 E. Shore Drive.

People will start gathering at 11 a.m. before the walk steps off at noon. If you want to come earlier, grab a complimentary bagel from Great American Bagel.
Make some signs, decorate your buggy or bike, and put on your walking shoes. Walkers will be joined by the Johnson-Phelps VFW Post color guard. The walk will be contained to the Lake Shore Park area.
Afterward, stick around for lunch and grab a burger or a hot dog, courtesy of Whitingham Meats in Alsip, S&T Provisions in Chicago and Jack and Pat’s Old Fashioned Butcher Shop in Chicago Ridge. Chips and water will also be available. Lunch is on the organizers. The Oak Lawn Raiders Social Athletic club will be firing up the grills behind PD's Place, 5407 W. 95th St., adjacent to the park. You can also use the bathroom there.
Country Financial, one of the event sponsors, will also be presenting a check to the Oak Lawn Police Department Club. The Blue Ribbon Walk is the brainchild of Mike Cerf, who has organized the walk for the past several years. The event has since blossomed into a community effort with many adults, children and local businesses getting involved.
Other event sponsors include S&T Provisions, BJ McMahon’s and Stars and Stripes Printing.
Despite a few isolated incidents in the village, Cerf still thinks Oak Lawn is a safe place “because of our police department and citizens watching out.”
