How long will it take for undocumented immigrants to find shelter in the suburbs around the City of Chicago?

It's August 31st, 2022, and 60 migrants are bussed into the city overnight from Texas. “As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food, and most importantly protection. This is not new; Chicago welcomes hundreds of migrants every year to our city and provides much-needed assistance,” Ryan Johnson, the mayor’s deputy director of communications, said in a statement to The Texas Tribune.” The one thing that caught my attention was the term “we welcome hundreds every year to our city”. Chicago mayor’s office calls Texas migrant busing strategy racist | The Texas Tribune

Today estimates reach up to 26,000 immigrants to our city as the city council refuses to allow citizens to referendum the sanctuary city status that Mayor Washington wrote in by executive order. The Governor has cut the rental assistance program by the tune of 160M in response to the flooding migrant situation. “The state will start cutting off a rental assistance program for new arrivals who aren’t already in the city’s shelter system and will begin looking to help asylum-seekers relocate to other parts of the country, while the city this week said it is implementing a 60-day limit for migrant stays at city shelters.” reports the Chicago Tribune Illinois dedicating more funds to relief efforts for asylum-seekers (chicagotribune.com) So if you're a single parent or single income family who is on the waitlist for rental assistance, you are being bumped for an asylum seeker and their family as a welcome wagon gift from the progressive caucus.

Currently Mayor Johnson is moving his strategy to fining bus companies in an effort to curb the number of migrants who are dropped off the city's doorstep. In turn, companies are leaving migrants in towns around the Chicagoland area, giving them train tickets and having them take the Metra into the city. Migrants are having conflict with residents all across the city as the city can’t get any of the promised shelters up in time for Winter. When will migrants figure out the city can’t take them in and they begin to find shelter in the suburbs (pretty sure Johnson administration is betting on that) and begin settling near train stations, malls and major stores in suburban Cook, Will and DuPage areas? Local leaders in the suburbs see the writing on the wall as Johnson is forced to counter move so migrants will stay out of his city and into your suburban neighborhood.

Where is the federal government in all of this? First the Biden Administration has abandoned border security in exchange to fund foreign wars. Second, congress is in gridlock as horse trading resumes over continued foreign war spending and border security. Republicans have made a mockery of their majority as the border continues to overflow, while Democrats scramble to find resources to handle the humanitarian crisis they created. With no additional support, cities are forced to make cuts to programs from tax paying Americans to honor a commitment they can’t keep. The only question left is… what’s next?
