Chicago Man Charged In Christmas Eve Carjacking At Oak Lawn Shell

The vehicle owner told officers that he was approached by a man armed with a handgun at the gas station pumps, Oak Lawn police said.

OAK LAWN, IL — A Chicago man has been charged in the Christmas Eve carjacking at an Oak Lawn gas station. Marvin Johnson, 22, was charged with one count of vehicular hijacking.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Dec. 24, 2023, Oak Lawn police responded to a report of a vehicular hijacking at the Shell gas station near 106th Street and Cicero Avenue. Officers found a man near the gas pumps who told police he had just been carjacked. The man told police he was approached by a man armed with a handgun who demanded the man’s car keys.

Oak Lawn detectives working the case were able to identify Johnson as a suspect, police said. On Thursday, Oak Lawn police, tactical officers and special response team located Johnson at his residence in the 7800 block of South Essex in Chicago. He was taken into custody.

"Plate readers were used to a certain degree but were limited in this investigation," said Div. Chief Gerald Vetter, of the Oak Lawn Police Department. "It was the diligence and investigative skills of the detective assigned to the case that had the biggest impact."

Johnson was due for a detention hearing Friday afternoon at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
