Don't judge a book by its cover

Why are some so quick to judge based on how one celebrates their ancestors' victories over oppressive European monarchies?

“September 16, 1810, when the Catholic priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla urged the people to take up arms against the Spanish authorities. He rang the bell of his church to call the people. The Mexican liberation war began that day and it was fought for 11 years.” mexican independence day: Mexican Independence Day in US: History, significance and how is it different from Cinco de Mayo? - The Economic Times (indiatimes.com)

Today marks the anniversary when the Mexican people began to remove their oppressors and gain the ever-valued independence that nations and cultures around that time yearned for. Can’t help to wonder if they saw how “the colonies” gained their independence some 30 years prior (revolution must have been trending at the time in the western hemisphere).

The GOP has made it nationally known that they want to create a relationship with the Latino community, to do that we must take a look at the latino lifestyle and motivations around days like the Mexican Independence Day that is celebrated so vigorously by Mexican and Mexican Americans alike. Some are critical of this celebration quoting “this is America not Mexico” as if the people are disrespecting this country by celebrating. Quite the contrary actually, this is the country that allows all of its members the right to free assembly to free speech against political oppressors is it not? It’s the beacon of hope that all who wish to pave their own way can migrate to and create a better life for themselves.

The Latino community as a whole pride itself on celebrating its ancestors. Dia De Los Muertos is a classic example of this tradition and widely held around the western hemisphere. Does that make people less American for doing so? If we want to earn the Latino support come election time, we must stop with the hater Ade and participate in the fun (you're telling me Americans don’t like a good party). Little things like this will exhibit our commitment as a party to embracing the Latino community and their culture as a part of the greater whole that is America!

So, let's get off our high horse come September 16th in 2024 and join the party. Let the Latino community know that we want to join the fun and work together to make this place the greatest country on Earth!
