Illinois Republicans view the IL-03 seat — under Democratic control for 38 years by Bill Lipinski, and later, his son, Dan Lipinski — as a once-in-a-generation chance to flip the seat in the heavily Democratic district. The GOP is counting on Democrats who traditionally supported the socially conservative Lipinski to cross party lines and vote for Fricilone in the Nov. 3 election.

Newman told supporters in a campaign email not to panic because “we’ve always been campaigning like we were in a neck-and-neck race.”

The poll also asked IL03 respondents who they favored in the presidential race, with 48.4 percent favoring Democrat Joe Biden over 39. 8 percent who said they supported Republican Donald Trump.

Likely IL-03 voters, which includes areas heavily populated by police officers, firefighters and government workers, said they were more likely to vote for Republican challenger Pat O’Brien (57.9 percent) over the incumbent Democrat Kim Foxx (30.9 percent).

Respondents were also probed if they supported defunding police and their likelihood of voting for a “law and order” candidate.

Women favored Biden over men, 54.4 percent to 42.3 percent to men backed Biden; whereas more men supported Trump (44.2 percent) compared to women (35.4 percent).
