OAK LAWN, IL– St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and many Illinoisans will be celebrating with parades and parties featuring green beer and cocktails. To remind motorists of the dangers of drunk driving and to help keep our streets safe, the Oak Lawn Police Department will be ramping up DUI patrols through the early morning hours of March 18.

“Because St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, we anticipate that alcohol consumption will increase both that day and throughout the weekend,” said Sgt. Kumke. “We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly, starting with a plan for a sober ride home before you leave the house.”

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most dangerous holidays on the road due to increased alcohol consumption and drunk driving. There were 272 lives lost in drunk-driving crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday between 2017 and 2021.

Revelers should also be alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs and traffic lights. Other surrounding towns are also planning to step up DUI patrols.
