OAK LAWN, IL — The Village of Oak Lawn is allowing trick-or-treating as long as participants follow a whole slew of guidelines to keep kids safe during the pandemic. Trick-or-treating will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.

Unfortunately door-to-door trick-or-treating is going to look different this year. Village officials are relying on residents' common sense to keep safe. For residents wishing to pass out candy, leave a porch light on, or put a sign on your door. The village has a printable sign available on its website signaling that superheroes and Disney princesses are welcome. Only go to houses that have a sign on the window or door. Vulnerable persons are encouraged not to feel pressured to participate in Halloween this year.

Families that do decide to participate in trick-or-treating, are advised to follow IDPH Halloween guidelines. Stick with your household when making the rounds in the neighborhood and stay at least six feet away from other trick-or-treaters.

Stay outside, use plenty of hand sanitizer, and discard the costume mask in favor of a face mask instead.

Residents who wish to pass out treats should leave individually wrapped candy spread out on a table on a table or walkway so that pieces aren’t touching. Also, residents should wash their hands or use sanitizer after passing out candy.

Don’t eat any candy until you get home and wash your hands, and, of course, check the treats and throw out any unwrapped pieces.

As an alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating, consider a candy hunt around the house or nature walks.
