OSWEGO, IL — Disposing of electronics can be a tricky business. In Oswego, residents have two ways to go about it.

One option is a drop-off while the other is a pickup. Every month, the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce offers a fee-based electronics collection program. The event typically happens from 9 a.m. to noon on the last Thursday of the month at its office center, 25 E. Jackson St.

Anyone can drop off devices ranging from TVs to dehumidifiers. Some items cost $15 in cash to drop off, others are free, and refrigerators cost $50. A list of prices can be found on the Chamber's website.

The Chamber said it doesn't benefit from the money made from the recycling program. It's instead used to make sure recycling is "done properly and responsibly."

The event extends to anyone outside of Oswego, not only residents.

The second option is only available to residents. Groot Industries, the village's waste hauler, offers a service to pick up some electronic waste directly from someone's home often for no additional fee.

Village officials said some items needing more than one person to lift may require a fee. The charge is determined by Groot.

To schedule a pickup, residents have to contact the company at 630-892-9294 at least 24 in advance.
