Oswego District 308 Goes Remote For Incoming Winter Snowstorm

All after-school activities and athletics were also canceled for Friday, officials said.

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego Community Unit School District 308 students will learn remotely Friday due to the incoming winter snowstorm, officials announced Thursday evening.

Junior high and high school students will follow their regular bell schedule, just remotely by accessing e-learning plans.

District staff said the decision was made for the safety of students and staff as "dangerous wind chills can lead to health and safety risks quickly."

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch ahead of a Friday snowstorm with potential blizzard conditions. Heavy and blowing snow is possible, and accumulations could be greater than 6 inches, with wind gusts as high as 50 mph, according to the weather service.

The first round of wet snow will start after midnight, with peak snowfall between 2 and 8 a.m. that could snarl the morning commute. The weather service said there could be a few hours on Friday morning where snow impacts the morning commute, with snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, mainly along and north of Interstate 80.

All athletic and after-school activities are canceled Friday, as are building rentals and Kids Connection programs, according to the alert. Officials said whether or not any events scheduled for Saturday will take place will be determined late Friday and be communicated with individual groups and teams.
