OSWEGO, IL — A longtime Oswego resident will join the Village Board of Trustees next week when the board will vote to appoint a new member to replace Luis Perez, who resigned from the board earlier this year.

The special board meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to vote on the appointment of Karen Novy as a trustee, the village announced this week. If approved, Novy would serve as a trustee until the 2025 Consolidated Election at which time, a candidate would be elected to serve out the remaining two years of the term.

Village President Ryan Kauffman said that during her two decades as an Oswego resident, Novy has become an active member of the community. Novy has volunteered at local schools, was a founding member of the Oswego Kiwanis Club, and has served as a member of the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

“She is invested in Oswego’s success today and for generations,” Kauffman said. “I know she will serve the community well.

Novy was nominated by the board to replace Perez, who announced his resignation from the board in April, just two months after being elected. Originally scheduled to serve until 2027, Perez stepped down with village officials citing his decisions to pursue an out-of-state job.

His election to the board was to have been the second time he served as a trustee. He was first elected in 2015 and served until 2021. Kauffman had previously selected Thomas Collins to take over the vacant seat. Collins had previous experience board experience in Grundy County on the regional board of education.

But now, the board will vote on the appointment of Novy, whom Kauffman believes will bring plenty of experience.

“The process of appointing the new Trustee has been rigorous and highly transparent,” Kauffman said. “I have consulted with all Board members to get their input. They have had the opportunity to interview the top candidates and provide their feedback. Karen has lived in Oswego for 20 years and would bring a wealth of knowledge to the Board.”
