OSWEGO, IL — Women graduating from Oswego High School and Oswego East High School this spring have the chance to learn basic self-defense skills through an Oswego Police Department program.

Officers will host the course from 1-4 p.m. June 29 at the Public Safety Campus at 3355 Woolley Road. The class is meant to educate and prepare outgoing seniors, whether they are going off to college or entering the workforce, to be more aware in their everyday lives and to have the self-confidence to defend themselves in any environment, police said.

The course is limited to 20 participants who need to be at least 16 years old. Similar classes have filled up in the past, officials said Wednesday evening.

On the day of the training, people participating are asked to wear workout-type clothing and no jewelry. The course includes physical exertion, so police said people with pre-existing injuries should consult their doctors before joining.

Applications, which open at 5 p.m. May 20, can be found on the police department's website. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
