Illinoisans Pay Second-Highest Property Tax Rate in U.S.

Plus, the top 10 counties in Illinois with the highest and lowest median property taxes.

A map recently published by the Tax Foundation shows the effective property tax rates for all 50 states and Washington D.C., along with their corresponding rank.

The rates reflect the average amount of residential real estate taxes paid as a percentage of home value. In Illinois, the average rate is 2.32 percent, which only is 0.6 percentage points away from matching the state with the highest rate in the nation.
