PALOS PARK, IL — I feel compelled to write this for two reasons — first to share a cautionary prediction and second a hopeful view of the future for our town.

In addition to the spectacle of the Palos Park Village Board meeting on February 27, Nicole Milovich Walters’ husband, Todd Walters, has been active on social media of late with aggressive, mean spirited and forceful attacks of residents whose views do not comport with his. He has resorted to name-calling (“Karen” and “Ronny” (his shortened version of Ronette’s name that Ronette does NOT use). But the most sinister move by Todd Walters, in a horrible attempt to mock his wife’s opponent, is his recent posting of an image of a body on a unicycle with Ronette’s face photoshopped in. This is all in an attempt to silence, punish and embarrass people with opposing views.

Herein lies my cautionary prediction. If Nicole Walters becomes Mayor of Palos Park, these corrosive tactics of criticism, mockery and condescension will have worked. And….we should expect them to continue. So with Nicole as Mayor, when a resident dares to stand up and speak out against the Board’s prevailing beliefs, that resident…you… should be prepared to be attacked, mocked and bullied. Why didn’t Nicole interject at the February 27 Board meeting to help regain respectful discourse? Why didn’t Nicole immediately asked her husband to tone down the aggression, stop the personal attacks and welcome diversity of thought? Are there no limits to what Nicole will allow? One must assume she is supportive of these tactics. Silence is consent.

So with that as the backdrop, I’d like to turn the page to whom I feel is the candidate fit for the job of Mayor of Palos Park - Ronette McCarthy. Ronette is good-hearted and wise with a hopeful vision for our town. Many of you know her already from her years of selfless giving of her time and talent to the community and to the residents. She is full of ideas to improve our town and it’s government. These ideas all revolve around her 3 pillared platform of Fiscal Responsibility, Community Engagement and Public Safety. And of course, she will work toward transparency in all the Village government does. With Ronette in the Mayor’s seat, our participation in decisions and our ideas will be welcomed!! And at Board meetings, residents will feel like they are a valued part of the team.

Ronette will be a motivating, stabilizing and hopeful leader that will engage with us to make our beloved Palos Park even better, more vibrant and more united.
