ST. CHARLES, IL — Whole Foods Market is coming to downtown St. Charles, with plans to open in Spring 2025, according to city officials.

Work is underway to transform the former Blue Goose Store at 300 S. Second Street into a Whole Foods. In 2023, Fort Union, a regional development commercial specializing in grocery anchors, acquired the property and entered into a lease agreement with Whole Foods Market.

Early in 2024, the city approved PUD preliminary plans for the project, making way for construction work to update the 40,000-square-foot building. Renovations include reconstruction of parking lots around the building, including a city-owned parking lot at the southwest corner of Illinois and First streets, according to the city's Whole Foods project page.

A portion of the city-owned parking lot now includes 30 parking spaces for public use at the north end along Illinois Street. The sidewalks and landscaping around the parking lots were reconstructed to add angled street parking, paver bricks, landscape beds, and decorative lighting, according to city officials.

Starting this fall, work will begin on the interior of the store. The addition of outdoor signage will also begin in fall.

The work will continue into early 2025, with plans to open the store next spring, according to the city's project page.

As a part of the project approval, the City approved an incentive agreement to reimburse the developer for the cost of the parking lot and street and sidewalk improvements, according to the project page.
