Airbnb Projects Record Weekend In Indianapolis For Big 10 Game

Home sharing platform Airbnb details the massive surge of Big Ten Football Championship guests headed to Indy: Report

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Big Ten Football Championship fans and Airbnb home sharers, you've set a record. Airbnb announced that this weekend's big game at Lucas Oil Stadium between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers will bring in the largest group of guests into Indianapolis in the history of Airbnb's platform. According to the home sharing company, Indianapolis is projected to welcome more than 2,400 guests through the Airbnb platform alone, which - get this - even surpasses the 2017 Indy 500. Airbnb says the Indianapolis Airbnb host community will earn $187,000 in supplemental income over this stretch of time.

As the two teams competing in the Big Ten Football Championship isn't known early on, this Airbnb data shows that a massive number of Badger and Buckeye fans made recent decisions to travel to Indianapolis to take in the big game, Airbnb reports. In fact, 55% of Airbnb guests to Indy this weekend are from either Wisconsin or Ohio (26% from Wisconsin, 29% from Ohio).

Airbnb adds recent reports indicate that most hotels are sold out for this weekend. The Big 10 Championship usually causes hotels to fill to capacity as many Indy-area residents, and even travelers know. Therefore, the growth of home sharing in Indianapolis is allowing the city to use these pre-existing resources - people’s homes - to increase lodging capacity and retain as many visitors as possible during this travel surge.
