Central Indiana Health System Pays $55,000 Ransom To Hackers

Hancock Health in Greenfield reports an attack by hackers was initiated to their system, leading the health network to pay ransom: Report

GREENFIELD, IN — Hancock Health in Greenfield says it's paid roughly $55,000 ransom to hackers in order to regain access to hospital computer systems following a Thursday attack, Associated Press reports. The central Indiana health network says in a statement reported by AP that the attack was initiated Jan. 11 by an "unidentified criminal group," however Hancock says it recovered the use of its computers and didn't find any evidence of affected patient information.

AP says The Daily Reporter of Greenfield reports more than 1,400 files were targeted, and Hancock Health was given seven days by the hackers to pay in bitcoins, worth about $55,000.

According to AP, Hancock's CEO Steve Long tells WRTV the ransom was paid "to expedite our return to full operations."
