The Marion Civil Rights Commission envisions a community that is welcoming, inclusive and preserves the personal dignity of all people. On Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m., the commission will celebrate its fifth anniversary in the Hickory Room at Lowe Park, 4500 N. 10th Street. All are invited to celebrate the group’s accomplishments and join in making this vision a reality.

Since its inception, the Marion Civil Rights Commission has worked to ensure that citizens of Marion have freedom from discrimination based on age, color, creed, disability, familial status, marital status, lawful sources of income, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity in connection with matters of employment, public accommodations, housing, credit and education.
In partnership with the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, the Marion Civil Rights Commission has facilitated the investigation of 32 cases involving Marion citizens. In addition, the commission also regularly attends local community events and hosts guest speakers to raise awareness of discrimination issues and provide education about individual civil rights. To date, the commission has attended over 30 events and hosted 16 speakers.

The commission has also provided educational training sessions on knowing and understanding your rights regarding housing and employment. In the past year, the 11-member group appointed by the Mayor participated in establishing a grant program through the City that focuses on assisting those people experiencing being homeless and helping to eliminate homelessness in Marion.
Help the Marion Civil Rights Commission celebrate the accomplishments of its first five years on Sept. 4. Enjoy food and refreshments, meet the commissioners, learn about your civil rights and discuss how together we can create a more just, diverse and inclusive community. This event is free and open to the public.
