Muhiyidin Moye, BLM Activist Who Grabbed Confederate Flag, Slain

Police identified Muhiyidin Moye, of Charleston, South Carolina, as the man killed in the shooting in New Orleans early Tuesday.

NEW ORLEANS, LA — A Black Lives Matter activist was killed in a shooting in New Orleans about a year after he made national headlines by trying to take a Confederate flag away from a protester on live TV. Police identified Muhiyidin Moye, of Charleston, South Carolina, as the man killed in the shooting early Tuesday.

Moye, who preferred the last name d'Baha, was riding his bicycle around 1 a.m. when he was shot in the thigh on the 1900 block of Bienville Street in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood, media outlets reported. d'Baha was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries. Police haven't said who they think killed d'Baha or identified what might've led to the shooting.

In February 2017, a news reporter broadcasting live at the College of Charleston captured d'Baha leaping over yellow police crime scene tape and trying to wrestle a large Confederate flag away from a protester.

DeRay Mckesson, also an activist with the movement, tweeted that d'Baha was "a force."

Camille Weaver, D'baha's niece, said in a post on GoFundMe that he died from losing too much blood. The family is raising money to return his body to Charleston and have a memorial service and funeral. The account had raised more than $14,000 by Wednesday morning.

"I can say that our family is beyond appreciative for the outpouring of love and support we’ve received today. Moya was a light and he will shine on forever," Weaver said in the post.
