Ex-Louisiana Deputy Pleads Guilty To Theft In Drug Raid

Karl Newman seized drugs, guns and more than $6,000 during a raid in Hammond, prosecutors said. Newman and another deputy kept about $3,000.

NEW ORLEANS β€” A former sheriff's deputy in Tangipahoa Parish who was part of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors to stealing thousands of dollars seized in a drug raid.

Karl Emmett Newman seized drugs, guns and more than $6,000 during an August 2015 raid of a Hammond, Louisiana, home, prosecutors said in court documents. Newman and another deputy kept about $3,000, prosecutors said.

Newman was indicted last year on a slew of federal charges. He pleaded guilty on Thursday and the charges were reduced to two under the agreement. He could face five years to life in prison. Johnny Domingue, a former deputy who was involved in the raid, was also indicted in the case and pleaded guilty to state drug charges, the New Orleans Advocate reported.
