Shooting Near New Orleans' French Quarter Leaves 11 Injured

NEW ORLEANS, LA — A shooting early Sunday morning in New Orleans near the city's popular French Quarter left 11 people injured, including two people who suffered critical injuries, police said.

In a press release, New Orleans police said around 3:21 a.m., officers in the area heard gunfire and found that multiple people had been shot. Police said ten of the victims were taken to local hospitals and one victim walked into a local hospital.

Police said at least two people were in critical condition. The shooting took place on a busy commercial block of Canal Street that has streetcar tracks and is near many hotels.

According to NOLA.com, thousands were gathered in the area around the French Quarter for the Bayou Classic football game between Grambling State University and Southern University. The paper reported that the Sunday shooting is the second mass shooting during the Bayou Classic football game weekend in recent years.

Police are in the process of gathering evidence to determine a motive in the shooting and identify any suspects.

Louisiana State Police and federal officials are assisting with the investigation.
