Virginia Congressional Shooting: Rep. Steve Scalise Discharged From Hospital

Scalise was in good spirits and looking forward to returning to work once he completes his rehabilitation, hospital officials said.

WASHINGTON, DC β€” House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was discharged from a hospital in Washington after being critically hurt in a shooting at a baseball practice last month.

The six-term Louisiana Republican was released from the hospital Tuesday and is starting "intensive inpatient rehabilitation," MedStar Washington Hospital Center said. It isn't identifying the facility.

Scalise represents Louisiana's 1st congressional district, which consists of parts of New Orleans and some of its suburbs. He was in good spirits and looked forward to returning to work once he completes rehabilitation, the hospital said in a statement. Scalise and four others were hurt June 14 when a gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia.

The 51-year-old congressman was struck in the hip, and the bullet tore into blood vessels, bones and internal organs. He has had several surgeries.
