AACPS Teacher Vacancies Halved, But More Educators Still Needed

Teacher vacancies have been halved during an Anne Arundel County hiring push. The county still needs 100 more educators, however.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools had 96 teacher vacancies as of Wednesday. That's down from 191 last year and 400 about two years ago. An AACPS sign is pictured above.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD โ€” Anne Arundel County Public Schools has halved its teacher vacancies in the past year.

AACPS had 96 teacher vacancies as of Wednesday. That's down from 191 this time last year. The school system had 400 educator openings about two years ago, The Baltimore Banner reported Monday.

"We are fortunate in that we are able to continue to add positions to a growing school system at a time when other districts are finding it necessary to cut staff," AACPS spokesperson Bob Mosier told Patch in a Friday email.

Mosier said AACPS is in a "far better position" this year. He attributes the improvement to:

  • "A relentless effort to show employees they are valued through compensation increases and other means"
  • "The cultivation of a mindset to create a school system where everyone can belong, grow, and succeed"
  • "The tireless and innovative efforts of our principals and our team in Human Resources."

The school system is still hiring, as classes start on Aug. 26.

"All subject areas and grade levels in addition to other school-based positions are needed," the AACPS staff vacancy website said.

There are no openings for bus drivers, and there were no vacancies this time last year either.

"Currently 54 bus drivers [are] in training," the website said. "For contracted positions, the possibility of combining employment with another position with limited shift hours or flexible work schedule is available."

Schools also use vans to shuttle students. There are no alternative vehicle driver openings. Six such drivers are in training. There was one vacancy last year.

"AACPS utilizes alternative vehicles to transport smaller groups of students to allow for flexibility in the driver pool and bus availability," the website said. "Alternative vehicle drivers do not need a [commercial driver's license]."

Here are the other openings across AACPS:

  • Custodians: 28.75 (25 last year)
  • Food Service Workers: 81 (94 last year)
  • Athletic Trainers: 0 (Two last year)
  • Crossing Guards: 43 (43 last year)
  • School Nurses: 1 (This is the first year that AACPS has reported nurse vacancies)
