Chevy Chase’s Phoebe Bacon Advances To 200-Meter Backstroke Final

Maryland's youngest athlete in the Tokyo Olympics is nearing her first Olympic medal as she prepares for the 200m women's backstroke final.

CHEVY CHASE, MD — Phoebe Bacon is one swimming race away from bringing home her first Olympic medal after advancing to the 200-meter backstroke final Thursday night.

The Chevy Chase native advanced in Thursday’s preliminary races and finished second in the semifinals, only 0.1 seconds behind Australia’s Emily Seebohm.

Bacon and Seebohm both advanced to the women’s backstroke final where they’ll compete against six other qualifying swimmers from Canada, Australia and China.

Out of eight total competitors, Bacon had the second fastest time in the 200-meter backstroke with 2:07.10.

Of 14 Maryland Olympians competing in the athletic games this year, 18-year-old Bacon is the youngest. She just finished her freshman year of college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
