MARYLAND — Maryland residents are in for a spring-like warm-up this week, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. But rain and potential thunderstorms could arrive by midweek as a new cold front moves in.

Monday kicks off the week with a mix of clouds and sunshine, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday will bring a chance of rain in the afternoon, with temperatures reaching into the mid- to high-60s in central Maryland.

The forecast will take a stormy turn Tuesday night with evening rain and wind gusts as high as 21 mph overnight, forecasters said.

"The day starts out partly sunny, but then more clouds push in during the afternoon and the chance for a shower increases," WJZ-TV reported Monday. "Showers will be scattered toward the afternoon and evening."

Maryland will enjoy even warmer temperatures on Wednesday, although the day will be mostly cloudy, with more rain in the forecast.

"Heavy rain and locally gusty, damaging winds can still be a concern as the strong cold front crosses major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. The rain and wind could lead to difficult travel," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said about Wednesday's forecast.

On Wednesday, Maryland residents should expect a gusty south wind at 10 to 25 mph, with the best chance of rain during the afternoon and evening hours, forecasters at WJZ said.

A potent cold front "will lead to a period of more widespread rain and gusty winds, with the chance for a rumble of thunder as the cold front moves through late Wednesday and Wednesday night," WJZ said.

By early Thursday morning, a few snowflakes could fall if the cold air moves in fast enough, forecasters said. As the day progresses, high temperatures will reach into the 40s, with lows in the mid-30s Thursday night.
