Nearly $55K Raised For Muslim Uber Driver Shot In PG County

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Somali Muslim man who was shot while driving for Uber in Prince George's County is slowly making a recovery, and nearly $55,000 has been raised for his family as of Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual who shot Mursal Abukar Ali as he was driving Nov. 20 at the pick-up location near an area Metro station.

Ali was taken to the R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

“An innocent man is fighting for his life while his family is left to process this trauma while they grapple with too many unanswered questions,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry in a statement. “We urge anyone with information about this crime to come forward and contact the Prince George’s County Police Department at (301) 772-4492 and the Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).”

A Dec. 3 update posted by Ali's wife to the GoFundMe, which had 782 donors contributing $54,447 as of Thursday evening, stated that Ali woke up from his medically induced coma and has been able to comply with simple instructions.

"He also has become a bit more stable but he has a long way to inshallah [if Allah wills it]," she wrote. "Thank you all for your dua [prayers] and please continue to keep him in your dua going forward."

“Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC) asks Allah to give Brother Mursal Abukar Ali a full and speedy recovery,” said PGCMC President Jameel Johnson in the statement. “We will communicate to the Prince George’s County Police and the State’s Attorney our expectation and support for their finding, arresting and indicting the individual(s) responsible for the shooting of our brother.”
