Man Died In Crash On Route 29 Near Broken Land Parkway: Police

Police said an Ellicott City man died in a crash on the exit for Broken Land Parkway Friday afternoon on US 29 in Columbia.

COLUMBIA, MD — A man died in a single-vehicle crash on US 29 north Friday afternoon, according to police. Based on the initial investigation, authorities said he may have suffered a medical emergency before the collision.

Mark Richmond, 71, of Ellicott City, was driving a 2015 Toyota RAV4 north on Route 29 north of Broken Land Parkway when the car went off the road and hit a barrier, police said.

The crash happened at 12:53 p.m. on Friday, July 12, and officials said it was unknown what caused the vehicle to leave the road.

Richmond, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Route 29 north was closed at the exit to Broken Land Parkway for approximately three hours for the investigation, which is ongoing.

INITIAL REPORT: A crash on US 29 in the area of Broken Land Parkway slowed traffic for hours Friday afternoon, according to the State Highway Administration. The right lanes were impacted on Route 29 north at the Broken Land Parkway exit, officials said.

The closure was reported after 1 p.m. on Friday, July 12, according to state transportation officials.

By 3:50 p.m., authorities said that all lanes had reopened.
