Ben Boniface Deer Creek Valley Fund Awards $50,000 Grant

Grant through the Community Foundation of Harford County will be used to support construction of the Deer Creek kayak/canoe launch.

Community Foundation of Harford County, through the Ben Boniface Deer Creek Valley Fund, has awarded a $50,000 grant to Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation in support of the construction of the Deer Creek kayak/canoe launch.

The Deer Creek kayak/canoe launch will be the start and first site of a water trail system that will connect the Deer Creek waterway with others along the Susquehanna greenway within Harford County. The grant from the Ben Boniface Deer Creek Valley Fund will begin the design and construction to provide public access to the Lower Deer Creek National Register Historic District for recreational, interpretive and educational purposes.

The launch will be on land that abuts Deer Creek adjacent to Route 1, a heavily travelled roadway that will provide residents and visitors with ample opportunity to access the trail system.

“It is our goal to provide a unique opportunity to enjoy the rich natural and environmental resources of the Deer Creek Valley and create a water-trail linkage to Palmer State Park, Susquehanna State Park and the lower Susquehanna River,” said Billy Boniface.

The Ben Boniface Deer Creek Valley Fund was established as a donor-advised fund through the Community Foundation of Harford County by Darlington residents Billy and Barbara Boniface in memory of their son, Ben, who passed away in 2012. The fund was started to support recreational and educational opportunities that foster increased awareness of the importance of the preservation of Deer Creek and its natural resources.

Founded in 2007, the Community Foundation of Harford County is a nonprofit organization supported by the community through donations, enabling individuals, families and businesses to leave a legacy to benefit the causes that matter on a local level. In 2014, Community Foundation of Harford County received accreditation from the Community Foundations National Standards Board, the nation’s highest honor for philanthropic excellence.
