Conowingo Dam Prompts Flood Warning For Harford, Cecil Counties

A flood warning was issued for the Susquehanna River, according to the National Weather Service.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — A flood warning has been issued for the Susquehanna River below the Conowingo Dam Thursday night following rain from the remnants of Ida.

Minor flooding is forecast, according to the National Weather Service, which issued the warning Thursday morning. It will take effect at 11 p.m. Thursday and expire at 5 a.m. Friday.

The storm dumped more than 6 inches of rain in parts of Cecil County, based on preliminary data submitted to the National Weather Service.

As of 12:30 a.m. Friday, 10 gates were open at the Conowingo Dam, which is operating under spill conditions.

At 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, the river stage was 24.2 feet, which is 0.7 feet beyond flood stage, according to the National Weather Service. The river is expected to fall to 23.5 feet later Friday morning.

At 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, officials said the dam was at 21.3 feet, and flood stage is at 23.5 feet.

"The river is expected to rise above flood stage just after midnight, reaching 23.5 feet," according to the flood warning. "At 23.7 feet, minor flooding begins in the town of Port Deposit."
