Fog Advisory Issued Across MD, Warnings In Effect On 4 Bridges

Authorities have issued fog warnings at bridges and a fog advisory for the Baltimore-Washington area because of limited visibility.

MARYLAND — A dense fog advisory is in effect for the Baltimore-Washington area as well as parts of Virginia and West Virginia. The National Weather Service issued the advisory around 5 p.m. Friday, and it remains in effect until midnight.

Visibility may be limited to about one-quarter mile or less due to dense fog across the region, according to the advisory.

Drivers should use headlights and leave extra distance ahead of them, the advisory says.

These Maryland jurisdictions are under the dense fog advisory:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County
  • Carroll County
  • Frederick County
  • Harford County
  • Howard County
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George's County

Fog warnings are in effect for Bay, Hatem, Key and Nice/Middleton bridges, the Maryland Transportation Authority reported before 6:30 p.m.

During a fog warning, people should not use high beams, which can cause glare.

Instead, drivers are encouraged to use their fog lights and low beams.

Here are precautions drivers can take to stay safe during periods of dense fog:

  • Increase following distance.
  • Slow down.
  • Avoid unnecessary lane changes.

Rain is expected much of Friday and Saturday, according to the forecast from the National Weather Service.
