Harford County Under Freeze Warning, Freeze Watch

Temperatures in the low 30s prompted the National Weather Service to post two weather alerts for Harford County.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Before April ends, temperatures are dropping to near-freezing in parts of Maryland. Forecasters have issued alerts due to the potential for frost and freezing conditions both Thursday and Friday for Harford County.

Northwestern Harford County is under a freeze warning Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. During the freeze warning period, temperatures may drop as low as 30 degrees.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops or other sensitive vegetation and may damage outdoor plumbing that is unprotected, authorities say.

After 3:30 a.m., the National Weather Service issued the freeze warning until 9 a.m. for these areas:

  • Baltimore County (northern)
  • Carroll County
  • Frederick County
  • Harford County (northwest)
  • Howard County (northwest)
  • Montgomery County (northwest)
  • Washington County

These towns were specifically noted: Jarrettsville, Cockeysville, Reisterstown, Hagerstown, Frederick, Ballenger Creek, Eldersburg, Westminster, Germantown, Damascus and Lisbon.

Cool temperatures will continue through the end of the week, with temperatures dipping as low as 31 degrees and frost and freeze conditions possible Friday.

A freeze watch applies to these areas from 1 to 9 a.m. on Friday, April 29:

  • Cecil County
  • Harford County (southeast)
  • Howard County (central and southeast)

These towns were included in the freeze watch: Aberdeen, Elkton, Columbia and Ellicott City.

People in these areas should take steps to protect tender plants from the cold.

To prevent outdoor water pipes from freezing and bursting, they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
