Havre de Grace Installs Ukrainian Flags On Union Avenue

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The city of Havre de Grace is showing its support for Ukraine in more ways than one.

"The city of Havre de Grace last week did put up five flags at Legion Square, across from the American Legion," Mayor William Martin said at this week's City Council meeting.

Placing the American flags next to Ukrainian flags is designed to show "we stand by freedom," Martin said Monday.

Since Russia first attacked Ukraine on Feb. 24, the Associated Press reports there have been thousands of deaths, but no official tolls have been released.

"I find myself completely glued to the television," Martin said.

"Not only are we all anxious that this doesn't escalate," Martin said, "but ... I think most Americans identify with people defending their homes."

Martin, who teaches U.S. history at Aberdeen Middle School, said Americans could relate to the idea of their home being attacked.

"That happened to us a couple 100 years ago," Martin said, alluding to the Revolutionary War.

"Our heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, showing the world that you know, 'We live here; this is our home, [and] nobody has a right to take it,'" Martin said. "I couldn't be more proud of the people of Ukraine for just saying no every single day to the Russians, and it's costing everybody dearly, the Russians and Ukrainians."

Earlier this month, the city ordered the Concord Point Lighthouse to be illuminated yellow and blue. The University of Maryland Medical System also announced it was illuminating part of the Harford Memorial Hospital campus blue and yellow as well.
