HdG Woman Wins $10K Using Children's Birthdays As Lotto Numbers

A Havre de Grace mother of four won a $10,000 prize recently playing Keno in Port Deposit.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — A Havre de Grace woman who played her children's birthdays in Keno won big recently. She bought the winning ticket at Jumbo Jimmy's Crab Shack in Port Deposit this month while celebrating her eldest daughter's birthday.

She had planned to go to the Hollywood Casino in Perryville with her two daughters to test their luck but one of them forgot her ID, so they went to Jumbo Jimmy's instead.

"Because we were pressed for time, we had to think quickly of where to go," the 53-year-old Havre de Grace woman said, noting one of them had to get to work. She recalled: "I thought, I haven’t played Keno in years."

After playing a handful of games, she put $6 on a six-spot ticket with the Super Bonus.

“I figured I might as well play all my kids’ birthdays," she said.

The result was a $10,000 win.

In disbelief when she scanned her ticket, she had the cashier check it for her.

After claiming the prize last week with her husband, she told Maryland Lottery officials she planned to share some of her winnings with her four children and granddaughter. The rest, they will put into savings.

She also said she went back to Jumbo Jimmy's and tipped the bartender.

For selling a $10,000 winning ticket, Jumbo Jimmy’s Crab Shack at 1065 Bainbridge Road earned a bonus of $100, or 1 percent of the prize, from the Maryland Lottery.
