MARYLAND — Visitors from around the world come to Maryland, making the Free State an attractive state to live in, according to a new report.

ConsumerAffairs recently published a study that ranked the best and worst states to move to in 2024. Maryland ranked as the 11th best state in the country to call home.

To compile the rankings, the research team at the customer review and consumer news platform compared all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., across five categories: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety.

Maryland had a mixed bag of scores:

  • Affordability: 11th
  • Economy: 6th
  • Education and health: 18th
  • Quality of life: 20th
  • Safety: 25th

A recent migration study by ConsumerAffairs reveals an ongoing exodus in Maryland with 2,880 residents leaving the state, while 2,134 people planned to come to it. That's a net loss of 746 residents.

Neighboring Virginia ranked 13th best among the states to move to, the analysts said.

Utah ranked as the best state to move to this year. Utah's affordability score was the highest of any state and was attributed to its low property taxes, the report said. The state also ranked third overall for economy and quality of life.

These are the five best and five worst states to move to in 2024, according to ConsumerAffairs:

The study used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ConsumerAffairs, Tax Foundation, Wisevoter and Zillow.
