Conditions were soggy, resulting in slower times for some, and extra bibs for elite runners contending for first place in case they had to shed layers along the 26.2-mile course.

Desi Linden, who lives in Michigan, became the first American woman to win Boston in more than three decades. Her official time was 2 hours 39 minutes 54 seconds.

"My hands were freezing, and there are times where you were just stood up by the wind," Linden said. "It was comical how slow you were going, and how far you still had to go."

Her winning time was the slowest in 40 years, a trend that stretched across the divisions due to the weather.
