The Hyattsville Volunteer Service Award was established in 2006 to honor a resident volunteer that has provided an extraordinary level of service to our community.

The 2020 Volunteers of the Year are Sherri McGee and Brenda Fawcett, volunteers who have collectively contributed over 1,000 hours of service at the City’s food distributions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite of occasional bouts of extreme weather, heavy box loads, and (did we mention) a global pandemic, these two volunteers brought care and joy to hundreds of community members during the weekly food pick-ups and senior meal deliveries.

The volunteers were presented with a piece of art commissioned by a local artist Katie Aldworth of Material Things in North Brentwood.

In addition to our Volunteers of the Year, this year the City of Hyattsville is also recognizing the accomplishments of the Friendship Arms Hospitality Committee. This group played a vital role in assisting the residents of Friendship Arms during the COVID-19 crisis by transporting food, masks, and other resources, and assisting with mass vaccinations given on site. They also jumped into action in service of residents after the building experienced a serious fire last fall. The whole committee will be recognized with a gift to identify members as helping hands in the community.

The City would also like to thank and acknowledge Daniel Richardson, Resident Services Coordinator at Friendship Arms, as the voluntary efforts of this group would not be possible without his support.

Thank you Daniel and the Friendship Arms Hospitality Committee!
